Pick Your Own Highway

  • 6679 State Road 23 Spring Green, WI 53588 USA (map)

Highway Cleanup to Celebrate Daylight Savings Time

We provide: Trash bags, picker-uppers, high vis vests, the longest day of the year so far

You bring: Good shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a sense of civic duty

What to expect: 3.4 miles of walking along each side of a flat highway. Depending on attendance we may split into multiple groups and walk a fraction of that each.

Twin Crix has adopted the highway, has committed to picking up the trash, and in thanks for taking on this obligation, the state has generously allowed me to advertise the farm to travelers. “They will doubtlessly appreciate how clean the forthcoming stretch of road is - and you shall incur their judgment if it is not!” Quite the shakedown, voluntarily undertaken.

This particular stretch of highway runs from the Wisconsin River bridge, where the Twin Crix sign is surrounded by area luminaries, to Hilltop Road, where the Twin Crix sign stands alone, pleasantly counterposed with Romeo and Juliet beyond. It’s a really wonderful walk - there’s even a paved bike path that, for some reason, runs along most of this stretch of highway, and the normies walk there. But for three days each year, we are allowed to walk the real deal, and pick up trash along the highway.

Sights to see along the way include:

  • The Wisconsin River and the River Valley

  • Taliesin (each and every building, from several vantage points, as well as Unity Chapel)

  • The heart of the Lowery Creek watershed: the twin valleys and their twin crix, their confluence in the Taliesin pond, the Welsh Hills (it will be burn season for these early burning hillsides, perhaps we will get a show!)

  • The barn

  • The blueberries

  • Neighbors’ houses (don’t be rude)

  • Evidence of recent installation of The Best Internet in the World

  • Some trash

In exchange for the signage, Twin Crix is obligated to take this beautiful walk three times per year, Spring Summer and Fall, and pick up the trash. I have chosen the start and the end of Daylight Saving’s Time, in Spring and Fall, and my birthday, in Summer.

And the start of Daylight Saving’s Time is coming up! This is a strong candidate for Best Day of the Year, in my opinion. The days have been getting longer - have you noticed? The sunset this day will suddenly and inexplicably jump to 6:58pm. Halleluwah. And if we are in a Fool’s Spring, it could even be a beautiful day.

So join me, for the first great act of Civic Duty of 2026, March 8, 2026, at 2pm. “Pick Your Own Highway” sounds like a good name for the occasion.
